É uma gaivota de grande porte, sendo a maior do mundo e é esta característica que a distingue das outras gaivotas, com as quais se mistura frequentemente. Os adultos podem ser identificados pelo bico maciço e amarelado, pelo manto escuro e pelas patas rosadas. É uma espécie costeira que se encontra na metade norte do litoral português sendo menos frequente na metade sul. Ocorre sobretudo isoladamente. O melhor periodo de observação situa-se entre Novembro e Fevereiro.
It is a gull of big size, the largest in the world and this is the characteristic that distinguishes it from the other gulls, with which mixes often. Adults can be identified by the massive yellow beak, by the dark mantle and by the pink feet. It is a coastal species that is found in the northern half of the Portuguese coast, being less frequent in the southern half . It occurs mainly isolated. The best period of observation is situated between November and February.
